Why I don't watch TV or the news
Reactions from those around me? A cult or ignorance about the president
When I tell someone that I haven't watched traditional TV channels for ten years and don't watch the news at all, two things happen. Some people start googling how to get a cult member out of their home, and others ask me if I even know who the president is. Both reactions always amuse me because they show how much television is still considered the main source of information. But is that really necessary?
I get important news elsewhere
In today's world of social media, I find out about really important news faster than on TV. And best of all, I only get the essentials. I know who the president is, where wars are breaking out, and yes, I even know whether Agáta Hanychová is in a relationship again or not. But unlike regular TV broadcasts, I'm not inundated with tons of junk that's pumped at us just to grab our attention and keep us glued to the screen.
I remember how a few years ago I was the only one at work who was excitedly watching the Olympics. Why? Because I was also the only one who didn't know about the news reports that there was allegedly a terrorist threat. Everyone else was scared, but I was enjoying the games. And in the end? Nothing happened. How much calmer would people be if they weren't constantly fed speculation and catastrophic scenarios?
Reality shows? No, thanks...
No, I don't know all the reality shows that are popular in Czech households. And you know what? I don't mind. Everyone should watch what they enjoy, and I've decided to watch only what really interests me—in a language that suits me and on streaming services that give me a choice.
What's more, I've noticed that since I gave up TV, my life has been calmer. No exaggerated dramatization, no unnecessary getting upset over news that I can't influence anyway. Instead, I have time for books, walks, or just quiet evenings without the constant hum of television.
What's the bottom line?
Television and news are fine if you enjoy them and find them useful. But if you watch them out of habit or because you're afraid of missing something, it might be time to rethink your habits.
Is it really that important? What about you—do you have a habit that people around you don't understand? Maybe it's time to proudly admit it and enjoy your own lifestyle.
